I saw a movie yesterday that I had to share with you, it inspired me so much.
It’s called Into The Wild, and if you haven’t seen it yet then you seriously have to get it out and watch it
The movie is based on the true life story of a man who I believe is one of the bravest people to have walked this earth
His name was Christopher Mccandless, and he deserves the utmost respect for being brave enough to start the journey that he undertook.
Chris left his family, friends and everything he owned to venture into the wild and fend for himself, taking with him only the bare essentials, his dream was to live in the middle of Alaska and live off the land.
What Chris achieved in his 23 years on this earth, some men do not achieve 5 lifetimes.

Chris was 23 when he was found dead in the middle of the Alaskan wilderness, he left the following note:
I HAVE HAD A HAPPY LIFE AND THANK THE LORD. GOODBYE AND MAY GOD BLESS ALL
He also realised one other insight from his journey, which was scribbled into his diary a few weeks before his death…
“Happiness only when shared”.

I saw this film some time ago Adam and it had several impacts on me. Firstly, that a lot of us just want to go away to be in nature to be on our own without all the stuff we have to do every day just to survive in this fast world that we’ve built. Some of us do it to a small degree.
Unfortunately, as we get married have children and then grandchildren and move on in our chosen careers we get boxed in and the dream can disappear into thin air.
As a parent and a grandparent I shudder at the loss of a child this way and I feel for Chris’s parents who may have trouble understanding their child’s motives. Until your a parent its hard to know how important that child is in your life..well its what you live for.
From my perspective it is important to understand that Chris found the Lord in his quest and to know that he is with Him now and that is what would comfort me if he where my child.

Adam, I get your enthusiasm, however like Bruce, as a parent it’s a double edged sword. I totally appreciate the disillusion so many young people are experiencing from the overstimulation of our consumer oriented society, and I believe there are far more effective ways to turn that into a positive experience.
My daughter has just returned from a 12 month voluntary stint teaching English, in a developing 3rd world country, with no electricity, no running water, no TV or internet, no communications of any kind apart from a once a week CB radio check, constant food shortages, tropical ulcers and complete isolation, and she LOVED it !!!!!
It has changed her entire outlook on life and she has a burning to return and continue to push the boundaries.
I guess everyone has their destiny to follow, but I would humbly suggest there’s more than one way to skin a cat!
